3216 - I am an anarchist

Hello, it's me again, well who else would
It be on my blog? It's late Sunday night
I've had a few pints and I'm feeling good
Now it's my task to put in words my plight
I'm sorry, but things are going quite right
Misery isn't what you'll get from me
Quite the contrary, most things are all right
Despite what you might try to do to me
No, the truth is that though I'm not healthy
Because I don't subscribe to normalhood
I'm still here, unabashed, and with some fight
Left in me, what can you do? Should you be
Apologetic? No, of course not, in your hood
You feel safe, but in the world, this feels right

3125 - It's gnat funny

Enjoying a quiet Sunday evening in
In the evening, evening in, evening all
Bend your knees laddies, ladies welcoming
You up their ladders to the window sill
Aladdin's flying all around the world
On a magic carpet ride starting at
The Carpathians, going to Istanbul
Straining all corpuscles like a pet cat
Training from St Pancras with Stan and Pat
Pancake Day's fading, Lent is just lending
Like spending time saving your dollar bill
Will Dalai Lama harm a fly or gnat?
Employing a quite funny scheme rhyming
Sorry, rhyming scheme, this sonnet's full

2787 - Tickly cough

Do aliens live out there in Saturn's rings
Or on its moons where oceans lie beneath
Or how 'bout one of those disks orbiting
The giant red-eyed Jupiter, it's breath
Perhaps warming those icy spheres where death
Is larger than life, as it mostly is
Apart from here on this blue planet Earth
Where every nook, every peak's touched by us
Directly with grubby greedy fingers
Or indirectly by the poisoning
Half-human wind that's now polluting both
The thing we don't value, the wilderness
And the thing we do, ourselves, and as spring
Heats up the sour air, we gasp for breath

2553 - Tweet to woo

I've just tweeted about 30 comments
On Twitter, and I've some new followers
I hope my reputation will grow, since
My intention is to post rib-ticklers
On a regular, nay, daily basis
If I keep doing this, surely my name
Will get known by the world. Better than Face-
Book, where it's just cliquey. The route to fame
In a meritocracy is when tame
Stuff is rejected, good stuff's recompensed
By getting more followers. Surely this
Is more democratic, and so my aim
Is to hammer this medium, see if sense
Can prevail when it comes to nonsense. Yes!

2480 - Ad pub

Tonight it's back to the King's Arms pub for
A Christmas comedy party, no less
Not really in the mood for a haw haw
Or a jaw jaw for that matter. Impress
Folk who don't care, it seems almost pointless
But put that aside, it's a chance to try
Some ad lib with Dermot, and catch up, was
In Asia, but he's back. Aim? Make words fly
And loop the loop, mad ideas tumbling by
Quicker than can be quite followed by bore
Or boor. Then beer may follow, hollow quest
Or noble, to swallow your doubts, less dry
Is the world, they'll all be the same, the floor
Will swallow them too. It already has.

2469 - Three types of death

Last night I turned on the TV at ten
To watch the news just before Question Time
After a long play on my guitar, when
I saw that Nelson Mandela, that fine
Leader of South Africa, had declined
And died that evening, tributes flowed freely
This evening the World Cup draw almost signed
England's death warrant. They play Italy
In Manaus, Brazil's hot jungle city
Then down to Sao Paulo, struggle again
Against seeds Uruguay, and then more flying
To Belo Horizonte, bit more easy
This time, Costa Rica they're up against
Feedback not good for act on 29th

2445 - News of the whirlwind

The massive typhoon hit the Philippines
The island of Leyte lies to the east
Taking the full force of Pacific winds
Leaving little of houses on the coast
Roofs ripped off, removed by the roaring blast
Families torn apart between live and dead
Sadly the aid can't get through very fast
But at least today the death toll has had
A reduction from around ten thousand
To two thousand five hundred, which has been
A relief. Other news being discussed
The Egyptian night-time curfew lifted
High energy prices, one of the themes
I also see there's discontent in France

2389 - Early morning ponderings

Here I am, back again from a night out
It's getting pretty late, quarter to three
But what needs to be said is not about
This or that, or the other, obviously
It's what you care about, not what I see
And so I don't care what you see or think
Though I should, but I don't, quite selfishly
It's my world, I interpret it, a blink
Of my eye is enough to form a link
Between it and everything else without
And in so doing, produce poetry
Upon demand, when I come home from drink
That's what I've done once more, and have no doubt
I'll do it again, so regularly

2311 - Machine gun

Coffee, TV, washing machine, flat, world
Consciousness, eyes, skin, hair, lungs, heart, liver
News, death but not birth, hate not love, it's old
But new to each unknown new-born seer
The forgotten have forgot they were here
They lost out being first, there was less then
Now there's too much, will cost the next lot dear
The difference between computer and pen
Technology has outstripped the human
It's smarter than its users and its world
But it still needs its users to give a
Breath of real life, a breath full of poison
Garbage in, garbage out, plug can't be pulled
Machines are our slaves, driving us faster

2299 - Happiness is a warm pool of blood on the classroom floor

The world's still here, sorry, silly losers
The Mayan calendar's end's not the world's
And never was. Funny how there's always
Mad egotists who want all of life spoiled
Maybe next time, losers! Sorry! Meanwhile
In the United States of Armaments
After the latest shooting at high school
This time in Connecticut, more offence
And ridicule will follow the statement
Of the NRA - more guns, not less, yes
That's the answer. Doh! Think I'm going to hurl
A rifle up their fat asses. Judgement
Of the world - they're crazy motherfuckers
May their happy warm guns grow sad and cold

2291 - Here we go round the mulberry bush

Round things include the world, maybe even
The universe, if we could see it all
The atoms that make up everything in
Huge amounts, are round, as electrons whirl
In orbit, Saturn's moons, the orbital
Ring roads around London and Manchester
They describe life and death as a circle
Wheels on the bus crush motorbike rider
While each day repeats the same old order
Night and day, day and night, you are the one
The first shall be last, the last first, spiral
Ride down the dizzying helter skelter
Or up the spiral steps to the dungeon
Life's a game of rounders - don't drop the ball!

2227 - On the road, on the track, on the runway

These are the countries I've been to so far -
All parts of the UK, also Ireland
France (mainly north, but also Basque area)
Austria briefly, twice to Switzerland
Liechtenstein, Belgium, Germany, Holland
Friendly northern Portugal, much of Spain
Some Italian cities, Slovenia, and
Eastern Greece, western Turkey by both train
And bus, the USA, but tried in vain
To see the Falls over in Canada
Next month I'll add both Denmark and Sweden
Maybe Hungary next year. Hop on a plane
Enjoy the view from way up in the air
Drive through strange towns, from trains observe the land

2186 - Space racing

The universe is almost infinite
It can't be truly infinite because
There may be other universes that
Could be infinite too, both in numbers
And size, and meanwhile the planets and stars
In our insignificant galaxy
Rush apart as we go through the light years
Thanks to that mysterious dark energy
That though invisible, beats gravity
And stretches space past the outer limits
Faster than light, if we can see far as
Thanks to Hubble we seem able to see
Though we feel separate, we're all part of it
All subject to the same natural laws

1963 - Please Feed Me

'63's biggest event - I was born
Although of it I remember nothing
While Plath and Cline declined to less than warm
Dylan and the Beatles both took to wing
Beeching's rail cuts, Big Freeze continuing
South Vietnam regime change, De Gaulle's 'Non!'
George Wallace against Civil Rights struggling
JFK's for them but he gets shot down
While in Manchester, Moors Murders begin
Great Train Robbery, the Profumo storm
John 23 to Paul 6, popes changing
MLK dreams his dream in Washington
Surtsey Island and Dr Who are born
Kenya independent, Cyprus fighting

1959 - Miles on wheels

Castro takes Havana, Motown starts up
February 3rd's the day the music dies
Makarios takes charge in independent Chypre
Tibet rebellion, Dalai Lama flies
The Kind of Blue sessions released by Miles
Britain gives its freedom to Singapore
Alaska's the 49th state, Hawaii's
The 50th. Earth's photographed by camera
From space. The hovercraft and Mini car
The South Vietnamese Diem regime's corrupt
The peasants welcome Ho Chi Minh's supplies
The biggest film in '59's Ben Hur
The Clutters killed 'in cold blood' (Truman Cap)
The M1's open - cars flash by like flies

1953 - Climb every mountain

In '53, Godot at last arrives
The hydrogen bomb is the latest wheeze
Tito's top in Yugo, Uncle Joe dies
Malenkov, then Khrushchev now have the keys
To the Kremlin. A flood in the North Sea's
Drowned lots, DNA's described (Crick, Watson)
Everest Hill's climbed and Edmund Hillary's
Most pleased, while Fleming's written of James Bond
The Korean fighting comes to an end
The States agrees to help MI-6 spies
Keep the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company's
Oil flowing from Iran, and imprison
Mossadegh, while the Shah runs off and hides
And Ike likes nukes - the States need more of these

1916 - World War One (Part Three)

Zeppelins drop bombs on London and Paris
Unreliable, liable to catch fire
Tanks cut through barbed wire to the Somme trenches
Of the Germans, but casualties were high
A million, 60% the Allies
The Somme was a sideshow, because Verdun
Was where the real German thrust lay - it lies
Before the plains of Champagne that lead on
To Paris. The French held firm. Attrition
There and even more at the Somme, the kiss
Of death, battle of equals, shells and wire
Yet France was a sideshow - the real German
War aim had been Russia, and maybe this
Tantalising goal would tempt them again

1915 - World War (Part Two)

In 1915 the World War progressed
Not at all, trenches static, give or take
The odd mile. U-boats and ships clashed from west
Of Chile to Korea. Both sides make
Advances, the British trial the break-
Through of the tank, while the Germans try gas
On the Russians, then the French, the Canuck
And Brits fighting near Ypres. The stalemate was
Established in the west, so the ruse was
To help Russia in the more fluid east
A sea route to supply them. But mistakes
Were made at Gallipoli. There were wars
At home as the Liberals split - Asquith's best
Had failed, and Lloyd-George now played for high stakes

1906 - Year of disasters

It seems unfair to blame San Andreas
I'm not really sure that it was his Fault
That way back in the year 1906
San Francisco was rocked and what was built
Largely fell down or caught fire, and it killed
About 3,000. However, far worse
Was a quake a few weeks later that chilled
Chile, when Valparaiso appeared cursed
Despite its name suggesting paradise
And 20,000 died. And now let's pause
To remember those drowned in water-filled
Hong Kong a few more weeks on, in the course
Of a typhoon and tsunami. This was
Enough to cause belief in mankind's guilt

1903 - Flying tonight

The first-ever heavier than air plane flight
Took place in 1903, the balloon
Superseded, thanks to the Brothers Wright
All those millennia when up a mountain
Was the only way to have the vision
Of looking down upon a bed of cloud
Up where the sky is always pristine blue
And the sun blinds you above the white shroud
When clouds are gone the land is now allowed
For study - famous coastlines come in sight
Peninsulas, rivers reflecting sun
Whole towns and cities, tiny cars on roads
Cheap flights pollute but we love the sheer height
And the world spread below our tube-shaped room
