1865 - Dramatic denouement

John Wilkes Booth, handsome, successful actor
Adored by women, even drilled for oil
So believed in the cause of slave-owners
That he hated Abe Lincoln above all
And plotted to kidnap him and then sell
Him back from Virginia to Washington
In exchange for Confederates, hoping still
Despite Robert E. Lee's surrender, some
Southern military revival would come
Having played such characters of Shakespeare
As Richard III and Hamlet, turmoil
Naturally wracked his brain, Booth took his gun
Hid behind the balcony, Ford's Theater
And popped one in Abe's head, fled, and was killed
