1857 - India rises

In 1857 India
Rose against the East India Company
Which employed British and Indian soldiers
And annexed ever more territory
Lately the Punjab, but was felt to be
A bad thing by the old landlords and by
The dispossessed Indian nobility
And royals with no male heirs when they died
The rebellion was northern, hue and cry
In the Bengali army with gunners
Handed pig and cow fat-smeared weaponry
Insulting to their religions. Their side
Killed relatively few trapped Britishers
Harsh revenge, then direct rule by GB
