In 1601, the siege of Kinsale
Saw the end of the Irish resistance
To the Elizabethans. Now the Pale
Around Dublin were not the only lands
Controlled by the English. The Irish clans
Had fought them off for years, but when Spain came
On Philip III's orders, assistance
By the Spaniards proved to be all in vain
The well-intentioned Gaelic Ulstermen
Tried to meet them in the south but they failed
To join forces effectively, and chance
Had robbed the Spanish of some ships and men
And so Mountjoy's English came to prevail
And Ulster was planted with Protestants
