The students they are rioting again
Like we did in the eighties; like they did
In the fifties, sixties, seventies, when
They fought the Bomb, the Man, 'Nam; never hid
From truncheons. They punched their weight, and now lead
The media, still right on all the way
Tuition fees go on rising; they feed
This French-style frenzy. Not Champs Elysees
In '68, but, all these years on, they
Show the same young excitement as back then
Meanwhile, the snow is almost here; we'll slide
We'll slip and trip, we'll skate through slush and spray
We'll ski down each hillside, glide down each glen
Break limbs, lie groaning in hospital beds
Yes they protesting and a lot of them are about 16, Blanaid's age. They aren't really rioting they're just wanting to protest and terrified by the way they have been treated by the police. I think it's the media and the police who are the most frenzied, the children are just scared about their lives and scared of these authority figures.
ReplyDeleteJude, i think it's a good thing they are protesting - most of them in a good humoured way. That's the best way to bri ng the matter to the attention of the politicians - sadly simply because they might then translate it into lost votes, rather than for any other reason...
ReplyDeleteYes, its spoilt by a small number of violent prats. A friend age 13 was seen on this day remonstrating with an 11 year old. telling her that she should only be here if she believed in the cause and if she didn't she should get back to school, A future politician perhaps! x
